The Elusive Shuttle Launch
11/5/2010. I traveled to Florida this week not only to see a space shuttle launch, but also to attend the 3rd annual Astronaut Autograph & Memorabilia Show (AAMS) hosted by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. The launch was given an early morning go-ahead for today which happens to coincide with the 1st day of the AAMS activities. Consequently, the AAMS attendees were provided with much-coveted tickets to view the launch from the grounds of the Kennedy Space Center. I arrived early at the center only to discover the launch had been scrubbed due to a fuel leak. At first, there was a possibility the launch would only be postponed until Monday, November 8, but the leak turned out to be serious enough to push the date back to Tuesday, November 30. Damn, damn, damn. No shuttle launch for me, at least in 2010. I'll have to come back for the next shuttle mission which is scheduled for February 2011.
Anyhoo, I was left with some time to kill before the AAMS activities began at 1:30 so I attended the Star Trek Live show held at the Astronaut Encounter Theater. As the "live" portion of the title indicates, the performance featured live actors. The audience members were greeted as new Star Fleet cadets on orientation day. A Vulcan showed up from the future and interrupted the proceedings to warn us of an impending attack by the Romulans. Much mayhem and frenetic action ensued. You'll be glad to know that while it was touch and go there for awhile, the Romulans were eventually thwarted. Phew.
