Reclaiming My Property

Picture of the Day for 5/31/2011. I've accomplished quite a feat- I'm single-handedly bringing down the property values in my neighborhood due to the foliage surrounding my house which has grown completely wild. It's like living in a jungle. It not only looks bad, but the branches of the trees in the back yard are entangled with the power lines. Not good. I met with a contractor today to see what can be done. We concluded that if it ain't nailed down, it's getting torn out. That includes the monster bushes in the front yard. Hallelujah! I HATE those bushes and the feral creatures they attract.

Moving Up the White Trash Ladder

Picture of the Day for 5/30/2011. Yes, this is a picture of my living room. No, I am not a hoarder. Despite photographic evidence to the contrary, I abhor clutter. I decided take advantage of the holiday and the time off work to devote an entire day to tackling the mess in this room. Here's the result of about 10 hours off work. I'm getting there. I'd say I no longer look like a candidate for an episode of Hoarders and I'm moving up to white trash status. Hey- it's progress.

Weekend Tradition

Picture of the Day for 5/29/2011. On the weekends, I head to Rich's Bagels to get an asiago cheese bagel (toasted) with scallion/herb cream cheese along with a large caffeine-free Diet Coke with lemon. I never deviate from this selection. I bring a book and read for about 1/2 hour while listening in on the conversation of a group of three men/one women who are in their 70s and are ALWAYS there sitting at the exact same table every time. I leave just about the time a group of cyclists come in. It appears there's a large group of people who have pretty much the same weekend tradition. I always wonder if the other regulars speculate about the red-headed woman (me) who comes alone and reads while eating her asiago cheese bagel.

Getting My Hair Done

Picture of the Day for 5/28/2011. Thanks to Bob Merrill and the vagary of genetics, I have snow white hair. It's lovely snow white hair, but ultimately undesirable due to my tender young age. Consequently, I spend three hours every two months (should be every 6 weeks at the most given how quickly my hair grows) at the beauty salon getting my hair dyed. My hairdresser underestimated how much dye she would need so went to the back room to get more. While she was gone, I quickly snapped a photo of myself. I figured this was as good a subject as any for my picture of the day.

I'm Famous - Part 1

Picture of the Day for 5/27/2011. Hey! Look at the credit underneath the photo of Al Worden (Apollo 15 astronaut). That's me! Now I can say that I'm published in Smithsonian's Air & Space magazine. Of course, it's totally inadvertent. Someone snagged this photo I took at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation autograph show last November from my blog. My friend Aurora pointed this out to me yesterday; otherwise, I never would have known. I think it's interesting that someone used the photo without obtaining my permission, but in this instance, I don't mind since the photo is clearly credited to me.

Chestnut Tree in Bloom

Picture of the Day for 5/26/2011. I was driving home yesterday and was struck by the quality of the afternoon light and how it illuminated my neighbor's tree. By the time I got out of the car to take a picture, the moment had passed. The effort wasn't completely wasted since it occurred to me that in all my years, I have never paid attention to a chestnut tree in bloom. It's a very impressive sight. As I was writing this blog entry, I had to conduct a google image search to verify I had correctly identified the tree. I never would have made it as a naturalist.

Working Too Late

Picture of the Day for 5/25/2011. As I've stated previously, if I know you and you're unfortunate enough to be in the vicinity of my camera, you WILL end up on my blog. My work colleague and friend, Richard Larsen, is the latest victim. This photo was taken at 11:45 p.m. at the office. Richard had a project going out the door and couldn't leave until it was completed; consequently, he missed the last train headed out of the city. I volunteered to drive him home on the condition I could use him as my subject for the day's blog entry. He's holding up a can of compressed gas duster (used to blast out debris from the nooks and crannies of computer keyboards)- not in a threatening manner against me, but in a threatening "all hope is lost and why are we stuck at work at this horrible time of night?" manner against himself. Luckily, he wasn't serious about doing himself in. I fully sympathize with the sentiment, however. Work just seems relentless at this busy time of year.

Vexing Vending Machine

Picture of the Day for 5/24/2011. I have a daily ritual. Sometime in the afternoon, I go to my office break room to purchase a bag of Smartfood white cheddar popcorn. Since the package is very lightweight, it doesn't have quite enough heft to fall easily from its perch high up in the vending machine. It nearly always gets stuck. Getting it un-stuck requires all sorts of violent maneuvers against the machine. If I'm alone in the break room, I'll bang my hip against the glass front until the bag shakes loose. If I have an audience, my co-workers feel compelled to join me in the application of brute force. Today there were three people who helped me shake the bag free. Unfortunately, the bag didn't fall quite far enough where I could grab it. I swear I could buy a vacation home with the money I've lost trying to purchase my daily bag of popcorn.

Miracle Healing Service

Picture of the Day for 5/23/2011. Hmm...the universe must be trying to send me a message. Notices of this Miracle Healing Service were tucked under my windshield wiper while I was parked at two separate locations a couple of miles apart. Either that, or the God is Faithful Ministries has a really efficient and enthusiastic marketing committee.

Game of Thrones

Picture of the Day for 5/22/2011. Short blog entry today since I'm writing this after a 14-hour work day. I've jumped on the Game of Thrones bandwagon. I had never heard of this book until HBO adapted it for a TV series which is currently airing. Both the novel and the series are very good- probably because they are almost identical. I have never seen a such a faithful adaptation since it seems that most filmmakers feel compelled to take some creative license (i.e., screwing up a perfectly good book) with their subject matter.

Something Must Be Done About My Hair

Picture of the Day for 5/21/2011. The surgery I had last July did a number on my hair. It feels like the texture has changed and of course I'm dealing with all the new growth (which I'm happy to be dealing with, trust me) after having lost a lot of hair immediately after the surgery. Gone are the days when I could just wake up, brush my hair, and have perfectly straight hair. I've come to the unpleasant realization that I'll have to actually "do" something to my hair to make it presentable each day. Sigh. Towards that end I spent $100 on a styling device which I'm SURE will solve all my hair problems. (At least I'm hoping it will- we'll see.)

I Would Have Taken a Better Picture if I Could Have Kept My Eyes Open

Picture of the Day for 5/20/2011. I flew home to SLC from Florida today. I decided I better get home before the Rapture which is predicted for tomorrow, May 21!

There was bad weather bisecting the country north to south. We would have faced a 2-hour delay if our plane hadn't been given permission to change flight paths and fly as far south as possible. Even so, the ride was very bumpy over Texas. The storm clouds were pretty spectacular- what I saw of them. They would have made a far better picture than the lame one I took of the baggage claim in SLC. I'm actually a pretty zen flier, but I do need to close my eyes and go to my "happy place" when there's significant turbulence.

Smooth Talker (Or, I May Have Creeped Out Elaine Viets)

Picture of the Day for 5/19/2011. One of my favorite authors is Elaine Viets. I'm a big fan of her dead-end job mystery series. She had a book signing today at the Broward County Main Library in Ft. Lauderdale, 45 minutes away from where I was staying in West Palm Beach. I was delighted that I was close enough to be able to attend. As she was autographing the books I had presented to her to sign, I mentioned that I was from Salt Lake City. This generated a lot of amazed commentary among the women within earshot of this announcement- almost as if I had declared I was from Mars. I assured them I had not traveled all the way from Salt Lake City JUST for this event. Then I realized that sounded rather dismissive and rude so I overcompensated by saying that of course I WOULD come out for a book signing, but then that just made me seem like a scary stalker. Sigh. I hate it when I tie myself up into a verbal knot. Sadly, this happens more frequently than I would like.

Bug Graveyard

Picture of the Day for 5/18/2011. I'm not sure what's going on in central Florida except to say the bug situation is a little horrifying. When I drove from Orlando to West Palm Beach two days ago, I took the Florida Turnpike which bisects the state on a diagonal and takes you through some pretty rural areas. This is what my front bumper looked like after the 170 mile drive.

Mamita

Picture of the Day for 5/17/2011. After the shuttle launch yesterday, I drove down to West Palm Beach where I'll stay for a few days. I'm working remotely so the cleaning crew at my hotel came in to clean while I was still in the room typing away on my work laptop. One of the women was Hispanic and to get my attention to tell me there was a problem with the toilet, she called me Mamita. I had never heard that term before so of course I had to look it up. It appears there are several slightly varying definitions, but bottom line, it is a complimentary term of endearment. Phew. I've become slightly obsessed with this word now. Didn't take much as I've inherited my dad's love* of vocabulary.

*He used to read the dictionary for "fun" as a boy.

I'm a Space Shuttle Launch Junkie

Picture of the Day for 5/16/2011. I'm severely sleep deprived. I took a red-eye flight to Florida that left on Saturday night (arriving Sunday morning) and the tour company taking people to the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) required us to arrive at the Orlando pick-up location (45 miles away from the KSC) at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday night for the 8:56 a.m. space shuttle launch the following Monday morning. (Sorry- that was a little convoluted.) That's two nights without sleep (except for an hour nap here and there). We were required to leave so early in order to give Homeland Security time to inspect all the buses going out to the viewing location on the NASA causeway. We were dropped off at the visitor center complex at about 12:30 a.m. and then asked to re-board the bus at 4:00 a.m. The photo above shows the extremely long line to get into the KSC.

I met up at the KSC with my friend Aurora who had a launch viewing ticket with another tour company. It was fun having a friend to hang out with for a few hours. The visitor center complex was open throughout the entire night to accommodate all the visitors. It was an interesting experience picking up souvenirs at the gift shop at 2:00 a.m. The ambience was completely different than the other two times I've been at the KSC on a launch day which has been during the daytime. The crowd tonight was smaller and much more subdued. Pictured below is the rocket garden under a nearly full moon.

So, back on the bus at 4:00 a.m. I made sure I wasn't the last one to arrive like the last time on April 29. I had a lovely seatmate on the bus, an 80-year-old woman named Virginia who was there with her daughter and son-in-law. On the way out from Orlando to the KSC, she was telling me that even though she's 80, she's up for an adventure and can keep up with her younger traveling companions. She was also excited to be staying up all night. When I boarded the bus at 4:00 a.m., Virginia was already there, but her eyes were closed. I didn’t want to disturb her so I started to sit in another row, but Virginia heard my voice and jumped up so I could sit next to her. Her daughter told me that Virginia had been waiting for me to return. Very cute.

We arrived at the viewing location on the NASA causeway while it was still dark. Below is a tiny image of the shuttle on the launch pad, illuminated by floodlights. (Double-click on the photo to enlarge it.)

Our bus let us off at a location where the launch pad was obscured by an island in the middle of the Indian River which separates the launch pad from the causeway. By the time I was able to walk to a spot with a clear view of the shuttle, there were crowds of people who had already staked out the prime viewing areas. The pictures below show what I’m talking about.

I had invested waaaaaay too much time and money in this endeavor (ha- that’s a little space humor for you- the shuttle that went up today is Endeavor) to risk having someone’s head block my view of the launch. I searched until I found what had to be the last remaining spot in the front. I ruthlessly stepped on a lot of toes to reach that spot, but I didn’t care. I was single-minded in my goal.

Eventually the sun rose over the Indian River.

Below are pictures of the shuttle in the early morning light.

There were several interesting sights to see while waiting for the launch that I wasn’t quick enough to capture on camera. A couple of dolphins swam by. Very cool. A hawk plunged into the river and came up with a fish in its talons. Also very cool.

Just like the KSC at night, the atmosphere on the causeway today was very different than in February. February’s launch was a nail-biter as it was literally down to the last minute before the shuttle was given clearance to go. This one was very low-key. NASA piped in the sound from mission control and there were never any hiccups during the countdown.

I stuck to my goal of not taking any pictures during the launch. During February’s launch, I was so concerned with photographing the event that I kind of missed out on the experience. I swore this time I would just watch and experience the launch. Turned out to be an excellent plan. Below is just about the only photographic evidence I have that I was there.

Even if I had wanted to take pictures, I would have been disappointed. There was a lot of cloud cover and the shuttle quickly disappeared from view. High up you could see the shuttle’s contrail through a break in the clouds. It was about that point in the ascent that the booming/bone-rattling sound waves finally reached us. The sound kind of crackles- it's rather hard to describe. I think it was the sound that turned me into a bona fide shuttle launch viewing junkie. It’s a good thing there’s only one more launch before the shuttle program is discontinued; otherwise, I’d probably go bankrupt spending all my money on coming out to see as many launches as possible. What a high.

Not a Good Place for a Turtle

Picture of the Day for 5/15/2011. I flew into Melbourne, FL today. As I was driving from the airport to the Interstate, I noticed this turtle making his very laborious way down the middle of the road. Eek. I sincerely hope he successfully completed his journey without having an unfortunate encounter with a car.

I Walked Out on Buzz Aldrin

Picture of the Day for 5/14/2011. I attended an Excellence in Aviation award banquet hosted by the Flight Test Historical Foundation. The event was held in Los Angeles and one of the presenters was Buzz Aldrin.

Quick tangent #1 - I found that the picture I have on my iPhone of me with Scrappy Johnson gave me a lot of "street cred" with the aviation buffs in attendance. Example - I asked one of the vendors who was selling prints of his aircraft artwork which was his favorite plane to draw. He indicated the F-104 Starfighter. I said, "Oh, I just had lunch the other day with the pilot who achieved an altitude record in 1958 in this plane." (Hey, you take your street cred where you can.)

But anyway, back to Buzz. I was on an extremely tight schedule. The award ceremony was supposed to end at 9:00 p.m. and then I was going to leave at 9:15 p.m. to catch my plane to Florida to see the space shuttle launch. Unfortunately, the program got off to a late start and by the time Buzz was asked to deliver a few closing remarks, it was nearly time for me to leave. As he continued to speak, it became painfully clear that I was going to have to walk out in the middle of his remarks and there was no way to sneak out gracefully due to the following reasons:

-The attentive crowd was a little star-struck by Buzz so there was a hush over the assembly.

-My table was in the middle of the banquet hall. No sneaking out on the periphery.

-I had to traverse a wooden dance floor in my high heels. I dare you to try walking across a wooden dance floor in high heels with nary a clacking sound.

It was rather mortifying, but after I had made a break for it, I had to be amused that I walked out on Buzz Aldrin.

Quick tangent #2 - I've been at a few events where Buzz and his wife Lois have been in attendance. I'm always fascinated to see what she's going to wear.

VERY Pregnant

Picture of the Day for 5/13/2011. Met a client and some colleagues from the Los Angeles office for lunch. Today is Jessica's last day before going on maternity leave. As you can see, she's VERY pregnant. She thinks she looks fat/bloated, but we all think she looks cute.

Power of a Red Head

Picture of the Day for 5/12/2011. This license plate caught my attention since I have first-hand knowledge of this. My reddish hair definitely gets a lot of attention/comments.

Robbie

Picture of the Day for 5/11/2011. Today is my nephew Robbie's 17th birthday. Don't be alarmed- he's not "special" or "challenged" in any way. He made that face on purpose. I do get a kick out of the birthday sign that was recycled from a Mother's Day banner. That is so appropriate for Robbie who is a frugal soul. He scolds his parents when he thinks they're spending too much money and routinely turns down offers from his parents to buy him things.

Since this is a Robbie-centric blog entry, I'll also post a picture of Robbie and his prom date from last Saturday. As a fond auntie I'm allowed to use the word cute to describe the photo. Cute!

How Was I Supposed to Know it's Bob Hoover?

Picture of the Day for 5/10/2011. This upcoming Saturday I'll be attending a banquet hosted by the Flight Test Historical Association honoring luminaries in aviation. A friend who won't be able to fly out to California for the event mailed me several 8 x 10 photos to get autographed by pilots he's hoping will be in attendance. I was able to identify several of the pilots, but this one (pictured above) stumped me. I took a photo of this picture and emailed it to my friend with a request to identify the pilot. He was HORRIFIED that I was unaware this was Bob Hoover, a very famous (in aviation circles) pilot. I know what he looks like now (see picture below) and it bears little resemblance to the young man in the photo. Sheesh. I think I can be forgiven for not seeing the connection.

A Good Store for Me

Picture of the Day for 5/9/2011. My family saw the movie Thor last Saturday at the IMAX theater in the Clark Planetarium. We ended up arriving early so we decided to spend some time browsing in the planetarium gift shop which was filled with an array of space-related items. My 8-year-old great-nephew Ethan came up to me and said, "This is a good store for you." Smart boy- he's got my number. I was in heaven. I bought the book pictured above about the space shuttle Colombia disaster. It's been a very interesting read.

Waking the Dead

Picture of the Day for 5/8/2011. The boisterous commotion inherent to family celebrations (i.e., birthdays, holidays) usually drives my commotion-hating niece Corinne to curl up under her parents' fireplace hearth. Today's Mother's Day celebration proved to be no exception. Five-year-old Sadie poked at Corinne until she received evidence that Corinne was indeed still alive. Phew.

Thor

Picture of the Day for 5/7/2011. My family, including my great-nephew Ethan pictured above (wearing a Thor t-shirt and holding a Thor action figure), went to see the movie Thor tonight. I had been looking forward to seeing it. Ethan, on the other hand, has been living for this event. His anticipation had him bouncing off the walls to the point his mother (my niece Chantal) and I had the following text exchange an hour before the family met for dinner prior to heading over to the theater:

Chantal: I have exceeded my recommended daily allowance of Ethan...you can have him now...

Michelle: You're not talking about dear sweet Ethan are you? I suspect he's all worked up over Thor.

Chantal: Just a little...he's been unbearable! Really, take him!

Michelle: We are, in just an hour or so. Hang on!

Chantal: Breathe...breathe...I can do this, I can do this...

Once the movie started, Ethan was riveted to the screen. He loved the movie, of course. Cute boy.

I Can Be Bought (Cheaply, I Might Add)

Picture of the Day for 5/6/2011. A coworker of mine is trying to assemble a proposal from several sample proposals other offices (i.e., San Francisco, Newport Beach) provided to him. The proposals my company sends to health plan carriers on behalf of our clients seeking medical coverage tend to be unnecessarily behemoth documents. Consequently, he's not only trying to stitch together a proposal from disparate sources, he's wading through a ton of information and deciding what can be streamlined. When I noticed this afternoon he was looking a little wild-eyed since this project requires a quick turnaround, I volunteered to stay late tonight and help him.

We had hard copies of all the sample proposals* covering the very large table in our board room. Initially, that was my picture of the day, but then I realized you could see client names on the documents. Not a good idea to reveal those on my blog. So instead, I'm posting a picture of the chocolate my coworker bought for me as thanks. I'm a sucker for mint truffles and he knows it.

*As we started to review the proposals, we noticed some of them were mine! I frequently do work for our California offices and the proposals I had done made their way back to my coworker. Made us laugh.

Future Dietitian

Picture of the Day for 5/5/2011. My friend Karl graduated today with a master's degree in nutrition. This represents years of hard work- not just the two required for the degree, but several additional ones for all the pre-requisite science courses he had to take prior to applying for the program.

Karl started down this path after his father was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident over five years ago. At the time, Karl was working at a job he didn't love. After his father's death, Karl reflected upon the fact that his father was passionate to the very end about his chosen profession as a scientist. This inspired Karl to work towards a career he was equally passionate about and he felt that going back to school would be a fitting tribute to his father. I think Karl's dad would be very proud of him.

Couch Potato Cat

Picture of the Day for 5/4/2011. Based on Jingles' frequent appearance on this blog, it should be crystal clear that I'm totally crazy about this cat. He's so odd. I mean that in the nicest possible way. He has enough personality for 40,000 cats.

This is actually a photograph of a picture of Jingles. My sister's family noticed recently he was sitting on the couch like a human and decided he needed some accessories so they created this couch potato tableau.

We propped him up on the couch in the same pose so I could snap my own photo of Jingles. Darling cat.

Royal Wedding Mania

Picture of the Day for 4/3/2011. I'm not too proud to admit that I've succumbed to royal wedding mania. I spent the weekend watching recap after recap of all the festivities. The irony of watching a prince marry his princess from the confines of a seedy hotel just off of Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, Florida was not lost on me. My life is not the stuff of fairy tales (at least not yet), but at least it's interesting and somewhat adventurous.

Yeehaw Junction, Florida

Picture of the Day for 5/2/2011. There's actually a place called Yeehaw Junction in central Florida. That makes me so happy. I absolutely must visit this town some day. My next trip out I'll make a point of it.

Orange Blossom Trail

Picture of the Day for 5/1/2011. My hotel in Orlando, Florida is just off Orange Blossom Trail. The name evokes images of an idyllic countryside, doesn't it? Well, don't be fooled. The road consists of endless mile after mile of seedy strip malls, adult bookstores, and strip clubs. Several of my destinations this weekend required me to drive six miles along Orange Blossom Trail until I reached the on-ramp for I-4. With each passing mile, I could feel a little bit of my soul just floating away until all that remained was a hollow-eyed remnant of myself. I'm kind of not kidding...

Winter Park, Florida

Picture of the Day for 4/30/2011. I spent the day exploring Winter Park, Florida- a small and picturesque town just a few miles north of downtown Orlando. I've always wanted to visit ever since reading a magazine article about the place and hearing how a neighbor used to live there when her husband was stationed at a nearby air force base.

Winter Park is situated near several small lakes that are interconnected by a series of canals. As you can see from the photo above, I went on a scenic boat tour of the lakes and canals.

Below is Lake Osceola. The tour also took us to Lake Virginia and Lake Maitland, but I'm only including one picture since the lakes look pretty much the same.

The narrow canals surrounded by dense foliage were my favorite part of the tour.

Apparently, Mr. Rogers (you know- THE Mr. Rogers of Mr Rogers' Neighborhood fame) owned a home on one of the lakes. I was a serious Mr. Rogers fan as a 5-year-old so I perked up when the tour guide pointed out his house. Sadly, I wasn't able to snap a photo in time.
