Last Kitty Meal

Picture of the Day for 8/29/2012. So it turns out that my favorite animal on the planet, Jingles the Cat, does indeed have cancer. Dammit. My sister Robynne has scheduled to have him put to sleep a week from today so Jingles is getting the royal treatment for his last week on earth. As a special treat, Robynne bought Jingles what she thought was fancy soft cat food. Turns out it's really dog food, but Jingles doesn't care. He loves it. Robynne's family (including me) had to give her crap about this mistake of course.

Last of the Tuesday Night Incan Shaman Classes

Picture of the Day for 8/28/2012. I've mentioned in a previous blog entry how I was attending a weekly class taught by an Incan shaman (a very lovely woman named Elena). It's been a couple of months since I've attended because I've been busy working on getting my new company up and running, but I had heard through the grapevine (OK- an Incan shaman Facebook group I'm a member of) that tonight would be the last class. Turns out it's just the last Tuesday night class. Elena is going to be starting a new series of classes that will be held every other Saturday.

I'm glad I attended. It was nice seeing everyone and the class topic was a good one- all about trust.

By the way, that's my friend Mary's leg that inadvertently ended up being prominently featured in the picture- not mine. In case you were wondering. Which you probably weren't. Just saying.

Harvest Bounty

Picture of the Day for 8/27/2012. I have great neighbors! My next-door neighbor to the south of me brought over tomatoes, zucchini, basil, parsley, and mint grown in her garden. Shortly after, my next-door neighbor to the north of me brought over cucumbers and a bucket of peaches and apples from her yard. I hit the produce jackpot! Yum.

Pet Funeral

Picture of the Day for 8/26/2012. We have a tradition (which some people think is sweet while other people see it as kind of creepy) in our family that any small pets who have died get a little pet funeral and are buried underneath the tree in my sister Paula's front yard. It's kind of a spectacle and I'm sure the neighbors wonder what on earth is going on.

My parakeet Bebe died in 2009 and we finally got around to burying her today. (You don't want to know where I've been storing her for the past three years.) My great-niece Hayley is shown holding the box holding Bebe. I read the following bird poem, Hope, by Emily Dickinson:

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

My niece Corinne's guinea pig, Piggins, died unexpectedly last week so he was buried as well. I was surprised the family was actually sad about Piggins' demise since he was ill-tempered and we swear he had been plotting his escape so he could gnaw the face off the evil humans who had been keeping his captive. Corinne also read a poem appropriate for the occasion and after that we sang a song.

My brother-in-law then declared the service over which made me laugh since the phrasing kind of reminded me of how the president of the IOC formally closes each Olympics by saying "I declare the Games of the Olympic Winter/Summer games closed."

Birthday Tea

Picture of the Day for 8/25/2012. My next-door neighbor Erma loves tea. She drinks at least two cups a day in addition to drinking just a plain cup of hot water at night. For her birthday each year, I go over to her house with a couple of boxes of tea and we spend a couple of hours chatting. Today is her 87th birthday! We had a lovely visit. Her husband was in the Air Force so she loves hearing all about my aviation/space escapades and I certainly love telling her about them.

Vulture Island

Picture of the Day for 8/24/2012. I had a couple of hours to kill before getting to the airport for my 7:00 p.m. flight home so I ran out to the Everglades Holiday Park (made famous by the Gator Boys reality TV show on the Animal Planet channel) just west of Fort Lauderdale on the outskirts of the Everglades. The park offers airboat rides and a brief alligator wrestling show.

I'm kind of addicted to going on airboat rides in the Everglades. You might think "you've been on one airboat ride, you've been on them all," but that's not the case. Every airboat ride is slightly different and there were definitely some unique things about today's ride.

Our guide, Jody, claimed she is the only female airboat captain in the Everglades. She's kind of a salty broad and I mean that in the nicest possible way. I got a kick out of her.

While we were stopped, Jody was pointing out a Purple Gallinule- a bird that was almost hunted to extinction for its feathers which were used to adorn ladies hats. I didn't take a photo in time so Jody was nice enough to search out another bird just so I could get a picture.

Jody took us past a spot called Vulture Island that was aptly named because the trees were teeming with vultures. Wish I had been able to get a better picture of that since it was a wonderfully creepy sight. Jody called them the Undertakers of the Everglades which has a nice poetic ring to it.

Of course we saw some alligators. We learned that any alligators we saw swimming around would be male since it's breeding season and the female alligators are sticking close to their nests to protect their eggs.

Below are just some pretty pictures of the Everglades.

And here are some pictures from the alligator wrestling show.

Sneaky Jaguar

Picture of the Day for 8/23/2012. I spent the morning at the West Palm Beach zoo. Since it's located right next to the disappointing science museum I visited yesterday, I wasn't expecting much, but this turned out to be a fabulous zoo! It's set up with three zones representing the Florida Wetlands, Tropics of the Americas, and Australia/Asia. While wandering through the Tropics of the Americas section, I walked past the jaguar enclosure very frustrated that I wasn't seeing any jaguars. Then I let out a surprised yelp when I noticed one right next to me at my feet on the other side of a glass wall. If we had been out in the wild, I would have tripped right over her. Eek.

Below are pictures of birds, reptiles, animals, and landscape from the zoo.

Holy Poop!

Picture of the Day for 8/22/2012. I visited the South Florida Science Museum in West Palm Beach this morning. It would be a really fun place to explore- if I were three years old. I was a good 45 years past the target age of the exhibits. It was worth the price of admission to see one little boy who was overcome with excitement at the wonders of the museum. He kept on exclaiming "Holy poop! Holy poop!" at the top if his lungs. Priceless! I think that's going to be my new catchphrase.

Traveling 2,000 Miles to See Jeremy Renner

Picture of the Day for 8/21/2012. You might think from the title of this blog entry that I'm trying to stalk Jeremy Renner (not that I would be opposed to the idea if my niece Renee wanted to- she's excellent at planning movie star stalking road trips), but actually it refers to the fact that I'm 2,000 miles away from home and went to see a movie I could perfectly well go see in Salt Lake City.

Anyhoo- here's my useful and illuminating movie review. I enjoyed the movie. Didn't love it. That is all.

Jupiter Lighthouse

Picture of the Day for 8/21/2012. I've been wanting to visit the Jupiter Lighthouse located in, you guessed it, Jupiter, Florida for some time now. Sadly, I'll have to continue wanting this as the Lighthouse is closed to the public on Mondays. Dang. Should have checked the hours before making the trek out there.

Launch Control Center Tour at the Kennedy Space Center

Picture of the Day for 8/19/2012. For the first time in over 30 years, the NASA Launch Control Center at the Kennedy Space Center is open for public tours. Of course I had to jump at that opportunity during my visit today. I'm starting off this blog entry with my favorite picture I took on the tour- the iconic angled windows "through which you can see mankind's future" (according to the building's architect Martin Stein).

The Launch Control Center is located right next to the massive Vehicle Assembly Building. The following are some exterior shots (and a picture of a model of the building since my exterior shots aren't great).

See the windows on the top floor at the far left of the building? That's Firing Room 4 which is where the tour took us. This is the room where the final 21 shuttle launches were controlled.

I got giddy (as a good space nerd would) seeing this sign at the entrance to the building.

On one side of the lobby is a huge mural.

And on the other side of the lobby is a wall of 152 plaques with the mission patch, launch date, and landing date for every mission launched since Apollo 4.

I took a picture of the plaques from the final three shuttle missions. I'm partial to them since I was able to witness those launches.

Up on the 4th floor, we assembled outside Firing Room 4's doors which say "The greatest launch team in the world enters through these doors."

Below is a picture of the firing room main floor.

And a picture of the windows from the firing room main floor.

We were allowed up into the "bubble" room where management oversaw the activities below.

My favorite part of the tour was being able to look out the windows towards the launch pads for the Apollo and shuttle missions. It must have been a wonderful sight to see the launches from this room.
