Ghost or Malfunctioning Door?

Picture of the Day for January 31, 2021. This door to a old ventilation system (pre-air conditioning) in my living room keeps falling open with the most horrendous bang. I know there’s no air blowing it open since the outside wall has since been bricked up. I can’t decide if it’s a ghost trying to say hello or if the door is just sad and tired and too weak to remain closed.

Hat

Picture of the Day for January 30, 2021. This is the first of two Brian Kershisinik’s pieces I picked up at the art gallery moving sale yesterday. This piece is called “Hat” and is a one-of-a-mind mono print created in 2000. Brian Kershisinik is a very popular Utah artist so I was surprised this piece was still available since it had been profiled as one of the items for sale (only $300!!!) for the past couple of weeks. I couldn’t believe it hadn’t been snatched up yet. I kind of think it was meant for me since I’ve had my eye on it. There’s a saying that what you want wants you back in return. I really do feel like this print wanted to come home with me. So it did!

Scary Art Gallery Location

Picture of the Day for January 29, 2021. An art gallery I follow on Instagram has been advertising their moving sale so I decided to check it out today. The art gallery is in a cute 19th century home, but oh my, I can see why they are moving. They are in a horrible part of town, sandwiched between an abandoned home (see picture) and a state liquor store. When I pulled into a parking spot in front of the gallery a disturbed individual stood outside my car and screamed at the top of his lungs at me  I looked at him impassively until he stopped. Then he opened up the front door of the gallery and screamed at the top of his lungs into the lobby.  Scary stuff.  I waited until he had wandered far away before getting out of my car. Once I was inside I had a great time browsing the artwork and I ended up buying a couple of pieces.

No Snow

Picture of the Day for January 28, 2021. It’s been the oddest winter. No snow to speak of.

Canopy of Lights

Picture of the Day for January 27, 2021. It’s not too far into the new year and I’m already working long hours. One of the perks of leaving the office late was being able to walk under this pretty canopy of lights.

Surprise Birthday Cake

Picture of the Day for January 26, 2021. Didn’t realize when I started off the day that I would get a piece of birthday cake. It was not actually my birthday cake but I won’t quibble over that. It’s my sister’s birthday next week and her friend brought it when the three of us met for dinner tonight

Car Trunk Surprises #2

Picture of the Day for January 25, 2021. I believe I’m going to make “forgotten treasures from the trunk of my car” a weekly feature. Can you tell I’m grasping for straws here? Resuming my picture of the day blog has been a little challenging during the pandemic when I spend most days at home.

So, here is this week’s forgotten treasure - turquoise earrings from one of my favorite Utah shops, the Native American Trading Post.

High Heels

Picture of the Day for January 24, 2021. Clearing out my closet and getting rid of all the shoes with 5-inch heels. Whatever was I thinking buying those shoes in the first place???

Hair Tonic

Picture of the Day for January 23, 2021. I follow an Instagram influencer who is into essential oils and frequently publishes the recipes for her various concoctions and remedies. I decided to make her spray for healthy hair.

All Bundled Up

Picture of the Day for January 22, 2021. Took the afternoon off work to spend some time with my newest great-niece at my sister’s house. Baby girl is a good sport about enduring the thousands of kisses we are compelled to give her. I rocked her to sleep and she slept in my arms for an hour. Baby snuggles are so very good for the soul. She’s all bundled up here for the trip home.

I Can Make That for Leas.

Picture of the Day for January 21, 2021. I saw an elastic bead bracelet at a local crystal shop that was composed of larimar, aquamarine, and selenite stones. $190. What??? I decided to order the stones and make the bracelet myself. The first installment just arrived - a string of larimar beads. My order of aquamarine beads is on the way.

This Will Gross You Out

Picture of the Day for January 20, 2021. I need to go grocery shopping. In the meantime, I had to get creative for dinner tonight. I took some leftover noodles, heated them up, and added mayo (yes, mayo), Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper. It was surprisingly good.

If I haven’t grossed you out sufficiently with my pasta/mayo combo, please note that my pasta concoction was accompanied by Diet Coke mixed with chocolate flavoring. 😀

Encouraging Words

Picture of the Day for January 19, 2021. My sister created a collection of encouraging quotes for me from a diet/motivational book we both like (The Ridiculously Big Salad by Amanda Rose). I followed her lead by switching out a new quote in a frame each day. I have this right below my work monitor so I can see it all day.

In the “Looking Worse” Stage

Picture of the Day for January 18, 2021. Big goal for the year is to finally declutter my house so I can begin work on some much needed repairs/updates to my house. No more just giving lip service to the goal.I spent the day working on my bedroom and using my living room for a staging area. Sooooo many shoes and purses to give away. Until I’m done decluttering, my house is going to look a lot worse before it gets better.

Good Witch Marathon

Picture of the Day for January 17, 2021. At my lunch yesterday with some friends we shared what shows we have been binge watching on Netflix. That seems to be a common conversation during the pandemic. Aside from binge buying on Amazon, there’s not much else to do. This past week I’ve been watching the Good Witch - a sweet Hallmark Channel series in which the main character brings enchantment to the small town where she lives and runs a bed and breakfast inn.

I’ve noticed I’m on a “magic” kick. Reading books and watching shows about magic. I wonder if the topic appeals to me during the pandemic when there’s so much out of our control. The thought of having magical powers appeals right now. There are a few things I’d snap my fingers to change.

Modern Speakeasy

Picture of the Day for January 16, 2021. Met a couple of friends today for socially-distanced lunch at Prohibition, a restaurant in the style of an old speakeasy from the 1930s. The decor was very charming.

Swirls of Gray

Picture of the Day for January 15, 2021. My red hair is a casualty of the pandemic. It’s been nearly a year since I’ve had my hair dyed and I’ve decided to let it go its natural silver. I love the swirls of gray through my hair as it grows out.

Kitchen Kachina

Picture of the Day for January 14, 2021. Just put this back on the wall. I had grabbed it during my office’s virtual Christmas party last month where (as part of a game) we were asked to go find the oddest item in our respective kitchens. I’m still outraged that my metal buffalo kachina hanging on my pink kitchen wall didn’t win!

Cooking Aftermath

Picture of the Day for January 13, 2021. Here is the aftermath of my failed attempt to make Cacio e Pepe (cheese and pepper pasta). Perhaps I should have actually followed the recipe rather than going rogue.

Car Trunk Surprises

Picture of the Day for January 12, 2021. My car trunk has reached peak capacity with random crap and purchases I’ve forgotten to take into the house. I’ve decided to grab one item from the trunk every time I arrive home. Look what I found today! A darling vintage Christmas figurine I had no memory of buying. I wonder what else I’ll find over the coming days.

Christmas Candy

Picture of the Day for January 11, 2021. I think it’s going to take me awhile to finish my Christmas candy...

Mini Road Trip

Picture of the Day for January 10, 2021. One of the hardest things about the pandemic is being cooped up at home. Some days I just have to go out and get a Diet Come and drive around a bit (nowhere in particular) to preserve my sanity.

Netflix Binge

Picture of the Day for January 9, 2021. I decided to check out The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix this evening and ended up binge watching five episodes in one sitting. Yes, it’s just as compelling as everyone says it is. Will the heroine finally end up defeating the reigning Russian chess champion? I can’t wait to find out tomorrow when I watch the final two episodes.

Reading with a Flashlight

Picture of the Day for January 8, 2021. Ive been reading novels at night under the covers with a flashlight. This seems like rite of passage for a young teenage girl (which I’m decidedly not). The Practical Magic series by Alice Hoffman I’ve been consumed with lately are appropriate for late night reading into the early morning hours. I just finished The Rules of Magic and started Magic Lessons today. The novels are filled with unrequited love, longing, magic, and prose that is lyrical, beautiful, and wise.

Grand Sachem “Wise Speaker” Wyandanch

Picture of the Day for January 7, 2021. Discovered through Relativefinder.org that my 12th great-grandfather on my dad’s side was Grand Sachem Wyandanch (1571-1659), chief of the Montauks on Long Island, New York. He was called “wise speaker” which I love. His daughter (and my ancestor) was named Sunksqua Catoneras Heather Flower Montauk and she married into a Dutch family. Apparently “sunksqua” is the feminine form of “sachem” which implies she had some status in her community. Family trees yield interesting surprises!

Annual Clown Tradition

Picture of the Day for January 6, 2021. I hate clowns. Always have. Not because they are scary, but because they are annoying. My niece and I have engaged in “clown wars” on social media for years by posting the most horrible clown pictures we can find on each other’s feeds. It seems inevitable that things have escalated. Now my niece and her mother (aka my sister) are giving me clowns for Christmas. This represents the items I received last year and this Christmas. Sigh. It looks like this has now turned into an annual tradition and I’m officially going to have an extensive clown knick knack collection.

Blue Ribbons

Picture of the Day for January 5, 2021. Noticed blue ribbons tied around my neighbors’ fences and trees today. I looked up the significance and I believe they are meant to honor frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic. I didn’t get the memo!

Temple Square Construction

Picture of the Day for January 4, 2021. Back to work today. My office overlooks the Salt Lake temple which is undergoing major renovations to make it better able to withstand earthquakes. I love watching the construction.

Decluttering: T-shirt Edition

Picture of the Day for January 3, 2021. Doing some serious decluttering. Spent the afternoon sorting through t-shirts I’ve acquired over the years. I’m thinking I can finally let this shirt go from 1991 when I worked at the Canyon Lodge gift shop (Yellowstone National Park).

Somebody Feed Phil

Picture of the Day for January 2, 2021. Spent the entire day watching Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix. The premise is Phil Rosenthal (creator of the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond) travels to major cities across the world to sample the local cuisine and culture, making a ton of friends along the way. It almost feels like travel porn given the current travel restrictions due to COVID-19. It’s been nearly a year since I’ve flown anywhere. For someone who had an average of 50 flights a year for work and vacation, I really miss traveling.

Books!

Picture of the Day for January 1, 2021. Books I received for Christmas. Couldn’t be happier. I have some reading to do!
