Vulture Island

Picture of the Day for 8/24/2012. I had a couple of hours to kill before getting to the airport for my 7:00 p.m. flight home so I ran out to the Everglades Holiday Park (made famous by the Gator Boys reality TV show on the Animal Planet channel) just west of Fort Lauderdale on the outskirts of the Everglades. The park offers airboat rides and a brief alligator wrestling show.

I'm kind of addicted to going on airboat rides in the Everglades. You might think "you've been on one airboat ride, you've been on them all," but that's not the case. Every airboat ride is slightly different and there were definitely some unique things about today's ride.

Our guide, Jody, claimed she is the only female airboat captain in the Everglades. She's kind of a salty broad and I mean that in the nicest possible way. I got a kick out of her.

While we were stopped, Jody was pointing out a Purple Gallinule- a bird that was almost hunted to extinction for its feathers which were used to adorn ladies hats. I didn't take a photo in time so Jody was nice enough to search out another bird just so I could get a picture.

Jody took us past a spot called Vulture Island that was aptly named because the trees were teeming with vultures. Wish I had been able to get a better picture of that since it was a wonderfully creepy sight. Jody called them the Undertakers of the Everglades which has a nice poetic ring to it.

Of course we saw some alligators. We learned that any alligators we saw swimming around would be male since it's breeding season and the female alligators are sticking close to their nests to protect their eggs.

Below are just some pretty pictures of the Everglades.

And here are some pictures from the alligator wrestling show.
